At Blue2 we get calls and emails every day from businesses looking for digital solutions. They might have a simple project, or they might need something much more complex, but they have one thing in common – the first thing the business owner wants to know is ‘how much will it cost to design my website?’

It’s a good question. We wish we could give a simple answer, but we can’t, because the price of website design depends on many different factors.

  • Do you have an existing website you want to update, or will you be starting from scratch?
  • Is it a simple shop window, or do you need ecommerce functions?
  • Do you want to be able to edit and update the site yourself?
  • Are you including a blog on the site?
  • Will there be one user or several, or perhaps hundreds?
  • How much content will there be?
  • Do you need multimedia elements?
  • Will you need training?
  • Do you want to redesign your logo and branding at the same time?
  • Do you have graphics, or do you need them designed?
  • Do you want to include an integrated marketing programme?

And that’s just the beginning. Perhaps you want an app to go with your site. Or you have a database that needs to integrate with the site.

So, now you can see that it is almost impossible to give a quick and straightforward answer to the question ‘how much will it cost to design a website?’

One thing that can really help you when you are looking for the right agency is to prepare a design brief, outlining all your requirements and specifications, and perhaps have a budget in mind. This will help you narrow down your search.

If you want some tips on how to put together a really great brief that will make it easier for you, and your agency, then click here to read our ‘How to write a really kick-ass design brief’ article.

It’s common to ask three or four agencies for quotes – just like with any other investment. Don’t be surprised if the costs differ wildly. Like everything in life, not all agencies were created equal. You’ll know when you’ve found the right one.
