That’s probably the question clients ask us most often. And it’s a good one. After all, that’s what ALL businesses are aiming for – and if they’re not they should be.
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of achieving good ranking for your website on Google. Here’s how to handle SEO like a boss. Take action on these five tips and you’ll be well on your way to that top spot.
1) Keep moving
Google is always changing and refining the way it ranks websites, trying to keep up is like trying to hit a moving target, and it means you need to stay on your toes. Review your website and your practices regularly and keep up-to-date with the latest advice.
2) Forget about Google
It’s Google’s job to find the best answers to its users questions, so forget Google and think about the users – your customers. Think of them when you write content for your site. Make it relevant and high quality, because Google loves these things. Would they find it interesting? Will it answer their questions about your products or services?
3) Think smart about keywords
You can’t fool Google by cramming every industry keyword into your homepage and hoping for the best. Use them, but be smart about it. Keyword research will help you locate the words your target clients are searching for the most. Try to use these in your page headings and subheadings. Don’t forget to write a good title and description, too, this is what your users will see on the Google search page.
4) Answer questions
With the rise of voice searches through Siri, Cortana and other virtual assistants, users are searching Google with questions. ‘How do I grout my bathroom’ or ‘Where can I buy flowers’. With FAQs and help articles or blog posts on your website you can show Google that you are good at answering questions.
5) Go mobile
Google knows what sort of device users are searching from. If they’re using a phone or tablet and your site isn’t responsive, you could be penalised for errors. It’s also worth remembering that people are using their smartphones to find local businesses when they’re out and about, you can make sure you’ll appear if you’re nearby by listing yourself on Google My Business.
